"PhD Viva: Nihad Matlab Mukhlif Hamad Al-Alwani"
The Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Anbar, discussed a doctoral dissertation titled: "The Generic Categorization of Rhetorical Meaning According to Al-Sijilmasi in Rhetorical and Critical Studies: An Analytical Study".
The defense was held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Abi Al-Thana' Al-Alusi Hall in the Deanship of the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Anbar.
Objectives of the Study
The dissertation, submitted by the student Nihad Matlab Mukhlif Hamad Al-Alwani, focuses on the rhetorical meaning represented by the universal laws that Al-Sijilmasi sought to establish in his book "Al-Manza' Al-Badi' fi Tajnis Asalib Al-Badi'". The study demonstrates that this rhetorical meaning serves as the general law of rhetoric and its backbone. According to Al-Sijilmasi's vision, it represents an orientation that governs rhetorical styles, which are acquired based on its general laws. This orientation parallels Sheikh Abdul Qahir Al-Jurjani’s concept of Nazm (construction/systems) as well as Al-Marzuqi’s concept of Amud Al-Shi'r (the pillar of poetry).
Furthermore, the study examines rhetorical meaning through its ten supreme genres (al-ajnas al-'aliya), which are:
-
Conciseness (Al-Ijaz)
-
Imagination (Al-Takhyil)
-
Allusion (Al-Isharah)
-
Hyperbole (Al-Mubalaghadah)
-
Arrangement (Al-Rasf)
-
Manifestation (Al-Muzaharah)
-
Clarification (Al-Tawdih)
-
Expansion (Al-Ittisa')
-
Inflection (Al-Inthina')
-
Reiteration (Al-Takrir)
Al-Sijilmasi distributed the methods of Arabic rhetoric across these genres without claiming to encompass every single style under them, as his primary goal was to establish the general law of rhetorical meaning rather than merely categorizing all styles beneath it.
